Abigaile Touts 'Space Beer' @ Dinner Event

Strolling on Pier Avenue near the landmark coffee house Java Man in Hermosa Beach, you might not realize the history that awaits you just around the corner on Manhattan Avenue.

In fact, when you turn the corner all you really see is a nondescript building, a block of concrete.

But true to the artistry and eclecticism that are hallmarks of Hermosa Beach, a restaurant with an on-site brewery fits right in. Enter Abigaile, and you enter the world of Chef Tin Vuong and his cohorts. It's a remarkable world of cuisine, paired with in-house brewed beer that speaks to the space's past and present.

BeerDinnerFlyerOn Wednesday, July 29, from 7-10 p.m., Abigaile steps beyond its already infamously wacky world to present a five-course beer dinner that includes a dessert beer made from brewer's yeast that was actually sent into space and orbited the Earth before being turned into a limited edition beer. That beer, the Ground Control Imperial Stou (aka “Space Beer”), is one of the Ninkasi Brewing selections that will be paired with other notable selections from Ninkasi, which hails from the mighty brewland of Eugene, Oregon.

Serving "Space Beer" in Hermosa Beach isn't that big of a leap when you consider that the spot Abigaile now graces was once a church, an artist's studio, and a gathering place for punk rock bands such as Black Flag.

For their special beer-pairing evening, Beverage Director Dave Keenan has chosen bold brews thatAbigaile's Chef de Cuisine David Bartnes is complementing with similarly robust flavors.

Here's the line-up: 

  • Foie Gras Torchon | peach and strawberry compote paired with Lux Helles Lager 5% ABV
  • Hamachi and Ahi Crudo | granny smith apples, chai spiced grapefruit, watermelon radish paired with Total Domination IPA 6.7% ABV
  • Indochine Pork Belly | celery leaf, cilantro, chili lime sauce paired with DAWN of the RED Imperial Red 7% ABV
  • Hunan Braised Short Rib | parsnip purée, honey roasted carrots paired withTRICERAHOPS DIPA 8% ABV, and the finale
  • Banana Tarte Tartine | cardamom ice cream paired with Ground Control Imperial Stout 10% ABV

The $60 per person price excludes tax and gratuity. Tickets can be ordered online.

When not hosting a culinary event, Abigaile features the creations of Chef Tin and Executive Chef Jorge Valines, who work with local purveyors to create a menu that represents an array of cultures and flavors using seasonal ingredients.

AbigaileP.I.G.The establishment has become known for finessed dishes such as P.I.G. “Pop Tarts" (pictured), with smoked pork confit, bacon, gruyère, wrapped in golden pastry crust and served with tomato jam; and Duck Confit French Dip with havarti on a soft roll, topped with Peppadew salsa verde and butternut-sage au jus.

Beach-side and on-premise brewed beers include Drop It Like It’s Hops IPA and The Singularity smoked brown porter. Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday.

The space offers dining at the bar and nearby tables or in the more expansive dining room the bar area morphs into as you move inside. If you're not up for food, go for a Beer Flight to take in the bounty of flavors beer can have.

The restaurant is open Monday-Thursday from 5-10 p.m.; Friday from 5-10:30 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-10:30 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-10 p.m.
